Why a School Breakfast Is Important – The brotZeit Project in Bochum

That’s exactly where the brotZeit project comes in: At select schools in Bochum, children receive a free, lovingly prepared breakfast before classes begin. The program is aimed in particular at children who, for a variety of reasons, do not have enough to eat in the morning.

The organization brotZeit e. V. was founded by actress Uschi Glas, who has been advocating for equal educational opportunities for many years. The food for breakfast is donated by the grocery retailer LIDL, ensuring consistently high quality.

In addition to healthy eating, the program also focuses on the social aspect: Seniors volunteer to help with breakfast, giving the children a respectful and peaceful start to their day. This not only enhances their well-being but also improves their ability to concentrate and fosters a positive classroom atmosphere.

With the support of brotZeit, equal opportunities are promoted in everyday school life—regardless of origin or social background. The City of Bochum coordinates the collaboration between the regional coordination office in Essen and the schools and supports implementation on the ground.
