Healthcare - Learning and living healthily

Health is an important prerequisite for successful learning. Schools in Bochum work closely with the public health department, school medical services and other partners to support and strengthen children at an early age - physically, mentally and socially.

What is part of preventive healthcare?

  • School entry examinationsBefore school enrollment by the child and youth health service

  • Vaccination advice and hygiene protectionInformation on vaccinations, infection protection and hygiene in everyday school life

  • Dental prophylaxis: regular dental health programs in Grundschulen

  • Promoting nutrition and exercise: Projects and teaching units on healthy living

  • Mental healthEducation, prevention and support for stress, anxiety or mental strain

  • Addiction prevention: age-appropriate offers on media consumption, alcohol, nicotine and other risks

How is preventive healthcare implemented?

  • through internal school health concepts

  • through cooperation with the public health department, health insurance companies and prevention partners

  • through further training for teachers and educational staff

  • by involving parents and pupils in health-promoting measures

Example from practice

A Grundschule introduces a "moving break" project. In collaboration with the health department and a sports club, exercise stations are set up in the school playground. At the same time, the children are given workshops on healthy eating and relaxation techniques.

Focus on mental health

More and more schools are focusing specifically on promoting mental health. School social work, liaison teachers and external specialist agencies offer advice, workshops and crisis intervention - confidentially and with a low threshold.

Parental work as part of prevention

Parents are actively involved - e.g. through information evenings, letters to parents or joint activities. The aim is to anchor health promotion in everyday family life.

Social perspective

Preventive healthcare at school is a contribution to equal opportunities. It helps to identify and compensate for health inequalities at an early stage - regardless of origin or social status.
