Subsequent examinations in NRW

Re-examinations offer the opportunity to achieve a failed promotion or qualification after all - under certain conditions.

When is a review possible?

A review can be requested if:

  • the transfer is at risk,

  • a degree was not achieved,

  • the performance in a subject significantly influences the decision.

Example:

A student has a "poor" grade in math and is therefore not promoted. A retest in math can be requested in order to achieve promotion after all.

Prerequisites

  • The school must give its consent.

  • The parents or adult student must submit the application in good time.

  • The re-examination usually takes place before the start of the new school year.

Example:

A student receives a report card with the note "not promoted". The parents immediately apply for a re-examination. The school sets a date during the summer vacation.

Procedure

The examination usually consists of a written and possibly an oral part. The assessment is carried out by subject teachers. If a pupil passes the examination, they will be promoted or awarded a certificate retrospectively.

Example:

After passing the English retest, a student is promoted to the next grade after all.

Special features

  • There is no guarantee of admission to the re-examination.

  • The decision lies with the school management.

  • In final-year classes, other regulations apply in some cases (e.g. central examinations).
