Attendance at lessons / absence from lessons

Regular attendance at lessons is compulsory for all pupils in NRW. It is a direct result of compulsory school attendance.

Obligation to participate

Pupils are obliged to attend lessons and school events punctually and regularly. This also includes project days, hiking days and excursions.

Example:

A visit to the museum as part of a class event is part of lesson time - and is compulsory.

Absence from class

Absences are only permitted for valid reasons - e.g. illness, family emergencies or approved exemptions.

Example:

Absence due to illness will be reported to the school on the same day; if necessary, a medical certificate will be presented later.

Apologies

The school must be informed immediately of the absence. A medical certificate is required for longer absences. Additional evidence may be required for frequent absences.

Example:

The school requires a medical certificate for three-day absences due to fever, for example if there is an exam week.

Unexcused absence

Unexcused absences may result in educational measures. In serious cases, disciplinary measures or a fine may be imposed by the Bochum Education Authority.

Example:

Repeated unexcused absences may result in the school informing the youth welfare office.

Exemption from lessons

Exemptions are only possible upon request - e.g. for religious holidays, family events or special dates. The school management decides on approval.

Example:

An application for exemption for an important religious holiday will be reviewed by the school management and approved if justified.
