Accident insurance

Accident insurance at school

All pupils in NRW are covered by statutory accident insurance - free of charge. The cover applies during lessons, on the way to school and at school events.

When does the insurance cover apply?

  • During lessons and breaks

  • On the direct route to school and back home

  • For excursions, school trips, hiking days

  • For school internships, project days and working groups

  • In the open all-day school (OGS), if this is organized by the school

Example:

A pupil injures their foot during sports lessons. The statutory accident insurance covers the treatment costs.

What is not insured?

  • Private routes (e.g. detours to the kiosk)

  • Tutoring outside of school

  • Homework at home

  • Leisure activities not related to school

Example:

A pupil falls on the way home because they take a detour via the playground. This route is not insured.

What does accident insurance cover?

  • Medical treatment and rehabilitation

  • Transportation costs (e.g. ambulance)

  • School reintegration (e.g. home schooling)

  • Care services for serious injuries

  • Injury benefit or pension payments for permanent injuries

Example:

After an accident on a school trip, a pupil receives individual tuition at home until they are able to attend school again.

Important for parents and schools

Accidents must be reported to the school immediately. The school forwards the report to the Unfallkasse NRW. When visiting a doctor, it should be stated that it is a school accident.
