Transition from school to work

The transition from school to working life is an important step. In North Rhine-Westphalia, there is a well-structured system that accompanies and supports young people at an early stage.

Early orientation

Vocational orientation begins as early as Year 8 at all secondary schools. The aim is to support pupils in discovering their interests and strengths. This includes

  • Potential analyses for self-assessment

  • Career exploration in companies

  • Internships to try out everyday working life

  • Consultations with specialists from the employment agency

These measures are part of the nationwide program "No graduation without a connection" (KAoA)which ensures a systematic transition from school to work.

Diverse paths after school

After leaving school, there are various options open to you:

  • Dual training (company + vocational school)

  • School education (e.g. in healthcare or social services)

  • Study at college or university

  • Voluntary services (e.g. FSJ, FÖJ, BFD)

  • Stays abroad or internships

  • Pre-vocational training measures for those who are undecided or in need of support

Support and advice

The careers advice service of the Employment Agency is the central point of contact. It offers:

  • Personal consultations

  • Help with finding an apprenticeship

  • Information on funding opportunities (e.g. BAB, assisted training)

  • Events and parents' evenings

  • Digital tools such as "Check-U" or "BerufeNet"

Schools, youth employment agencies and local networks such as MINT.BOchum offer targeted support - especially for those interested in technology and science.

Shaping the transition - individually and inclusively

The aim is to ensure an equal opportunity, stereotype-free and inclusive transition. Young people with special needs, young people with a history of migration or without a school-leaving certificate are also given targeted support.

Tip:

Career guidance services should be used at an early stage. Those who know their own strengths and inform themselves can make confident decisions - and successfully shape their own path.
