Cultural projects

Culture and school

Culture and School supports artistic projects in all types of schools - alternative schools are funded directly by the Arnsberg district government. Schools are invited to develop project proposals that promote children's creativity and supplement school learning with complementary and contrasting elements. Applications in the form of a project outline must be submitted via kultur.web (KULTUR.web Login) by March 31 of each year. A jury of experts will assess whether a project is eligible for funding. The project period covers one school year. Artists currently receive 3,300 euros for 40 units of 90 minutes each, plus travel and project-related material expenses of a maximum of 900 euros per project.

Kulturrucksack NRW" project

The activities within the framework of "Kulturrucksack NRW" focus on supporting field of action 6 (Lifelong learning and culture) and field of action 9 (Social justice & sustainable society) of the Sustainability strategy of the city of Bochum and in particular the following SDGs: 4, 10 and 16.

  • High-quality education

  • Clean water and sanitary facilities

  • Fewer inequalities

The Kulturrucksack NRW in Bochum 2025 is open.

What are you looking for - is this the right place?

In the Program Kulturrucksack NRW gives children and young people between the ages of ten and 14 the opportunity to get to know art and culture and, above all, to become creative themselves: dancing, making music, acting, writing texts, making film clips, painting and much more is possible. Every year, around 20 projects are supported and implemented within Bochum.

The offers take place, for example, in youth centers and clubs, at theaters or in museums. They can be short workshops or longer projects, vacation activities or special excursions.

What information is important?

The following key conditions for funding by the state of NRW must be observed:

- New projects or existing projects that are clearly further developed in line with the Kulturrucksack philosophy are eligible for funding. Information and suggestions for the NRW program can be found at www.kulturrucksack.nrw.de available.
- The offers should be free of charge or significantly reduced in cost for the participating target group.
- The focus is on activating formats and methods that allow children and young people to become creative themselves.
- Receptive offers should always be linked to a creative contribution by the participants themselves. In the case of introductory or trial offers for special target groups, it should be clear how the receptive offer is conceptually used for creative work with the target group.
- School-related, classroom-based projects are not eligible for funding under the Kulturrucksack NRW program. Anyone wishing to carry out a cultural school project is referred to the state program Culture and School. Further details can be found at https://kultur-und-schule.de to be found.
- The projects must be led by qualified artists and cultural educators. Appropriate professional skills of the project leaders are a decisive prerequisite. The qualifications of the relevant specialists must be stated when submitting the application and written proof must be provided on request. Experience in carrying out projects with children and young people is also a prerequisite.

After a project has been implemented, a proof of use must be submitted.

Institutions interested in implementing a project are recommended to seek advice from the Municipal Integration Center. It is possible to make an appointment.

Notes on data protection can be found here.

Frequently asked questions - Art on the school pot (FAQ)

Who can take part?

All municipal schools in Bochum - Grundschulen, secondary schools and Förderschulen - are eligible to take part.

How does a school apply?

Applications should be sent by e-mail to: schulpott@bochum.de. The application must state which toilet facility (facility for girls and/or facility for boys) is to be designed. Ideally, an initial concept should be included.

Is it possible for students or parents to apply directly?

A direct application is only possible with the involvement of the school management. However, pupils and parents can encourage the school to participate and make themselves available as coordinators for the project. If an application is received, the consent of the school management is required. Contact must be established with the school.

What must be included in the application?

Initially, only a little information is required:

  • Which toilet facility is to be designed / where is it located?

  • Initial ideas or a rough concept, possibly already photos of the system

Further information and a complete concept will be requested after an initial inspection by the Central Services on admission to the competition.

Until when is an application possible?

For the 2025/26 school year, applications had to be submitted by March 30, 2025 possible. Information on the next round will be provided at the beginning of 2026.

Which criteria are relevant for the competition?

The jury pays particular attention to the following aspects:

  • Participation: Pupils should play an active role in shaping the program.

  • Sustainability: e.g. through upcycling or resource-saving materials.

  • Creativity and impact: How much is the room enhanced by the design?

Which toilet facilities can be designed?

Only toilet facilities that are technically in order or can be repaired with little effort will be considered. New buildings or extensive renovations are not part of the project.

Where are the results published?

Photos of the designed toilets from the first round will be published shortly on the corresponding website.

The first round is done!

The first round of the competition is over - and we are delighted with the many great ideas that have been implemented with great commitment and passion.

These three schools were particularly convincing:

  • Willy Brandt Gesamtschule - Winner of the main prize of 2,000 euros with two impressive designs in the style of "pot wars" and underwater world.

  • Grundschule Günnigfeld - Special bonus of 1,000 euros, as each class has an individually designed cabin.

  • Janusz Korczak School - Special award of 500 euros for the realization in the style of the artist group "44 Flavours".

The jury not only had a lot to evaluate on the inspection day - but also a lot of fun! Among other things, they assessed

  • Participation: How actively were the pupils involved?

  • Sustainability: Was the topic creatively addressed?

  • Upcycling: Have materials been reused sensibly?

Now it's time for round two!

The application phase for the second round ran until the end of April 2025.
Many exciting proposals have already been received - we are very pleased about the great interest!

What can participating schools expect?

  • 500 Euro material flat rate and basic painting equipment

  • Support from Central Services for technical and practical issues

  • Design period: 1st school semester 2025/2026

  • Prize money for the winning school: 2,000 euros

It is important to us that the toilets are redesigned together with the children and young people - creatively, sustainably and with a desire for change!

WC facilities that are technically intact or can be repaired with little effort can take part. Please note: This is not about renovations or new buildings - and also not about the introduction of pay toilets.

The results are submitted after the design phase has been completed. Among other things, an implementation concept, photos of the processes, a short reflection and, of course, the creativity of the results are evaluated.
