Easy language
Information in plain language
Easy-to-read language is currently only available on a few pages.
What is plain language?
Easy language is a form of language that can be recognized by its particularly simple form of expression.
It is primarily aimed at people with learning and comprehension difficulties, people with dementia, people with reading difficulties and people whose native language is not German. However, even in science it is difficult to define easy language precisely.
Rules for the use of plain language in Germany were first published in 2006 by the Easy Language Network and drawn up by the association Inclusion Europe and gradually extended to the EU member states. These rules do not have the character of law and are therefore only guidelines for plain language. The verification of compliance is carried out solely by people with the relevant disabilities, who proofread the texts and thus check that they are appropriate for the target group for the authors.
The advantage of plain language is that, unlike sign language or Braille, it can also be read by people without disabilities and without prior knowledge. Easy-to-read language is therefore intended to meet the accessibility requirements for difficult and incomprehensible texts. It is also explicitly required in BITV 2.0 in Section 3 for new websites since April 2012 and for existing websites by April 2014 at the latest for basic content and navigation elements. Easy-to-read language is by no means intended to replace "difficult language", i.e. normal language. Rather, it is intended to serve the above-mentioned target group as a supplementary translation for texts that are perceived as too complicated and difficult to understand. It is based on grammatically simple main sentences that are limited to the essential information. In addition, the rules of German grammar and spelling may be deviated from for the sake of readability, particularly with regard to sentence constructions and word division. Illustrations and graphics support text comprehension by visually supplementing the content. Easy-to-read language is therefore particularly important for understanding the content of laws, applications, notices and information texts.
