Healthy nutrition - energy for everyday school life
Healthy nutrition - energy for everyday school life
A balanced diet supports concentration, performance and well-being. Schools and parents work together to ensure that children get through the day well and healthy - regardless of their origin or social background.
Why is a healthy diet so important?
It promotes physical and mental development.
It improves concentration and learning behavior.
It strengthens the immune system and prevents illness.
It supports a positive body image and eating behavior.
What is involved?
Breakfast: A wholesome breakfast with whole grains, fruit and dairy products gives you energy for the start of the day.
Snacks during breaks: The lunch box should be filled with a variety of foods - e.g. wholemeal bread, vegetables, fruit and water.
Lunch: A balanced lunch is important in all-day schools. School meals are based on the quality standards of the German Nutrition Society (DGE).
Drinks: Water or unsweetened tea is best - sugary drinks should be avoided.
Variety: Different food groups provide a variety of nutrients and make eating interesting.
What do schools do?
Participation in the EU school program (free fruit, vegetables, milk).
Nutrition education in the classroom, e.g. in science, biology or home economics.
Projects and action days on healthy eating, e.g. "Healthy Week" or "Snack Challenge".
Cooperation with caterers who cook according to DGE standards.
Involving parents and children in the organization of school meals.
Example from practice
One school is running a "snack workshop" project. Together with parents, children prepare healthy snacks, learn about nutrients and create an exhibition for the school community.
Ensuring social participation
Children from low-income families can receive a free or reduced-price lunch through the education and participation package. Schools provide support with the application process.
Parental work as the key
Parents are involved through information evenings, recipes, newsletters and workshops. The aim is to promote healthy eating in everyday family life - in a practical way that is suitable for everyday use.
Social perspective
Healthy eating is a contribution to educational equality. It creates a level playing field for successful learning - regardless of social or cultural differences.
